About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Activity

James, excellent point. We must take each student as an individual & even their success in each class on an individual basis. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Trisha, this is definitely a challenge & unless the student walks in with the information & is willing to share, we really can't tell. One of the best courses is for us to be open & supportive & help however we can. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Ronald, the life experiences are a great tool & I think also helps the students so when they face a new situation, they can identify it with one of those experiences that have been shared & it will seem more familiar. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
James , what an excellent point, especially about the value of reinforcement & repetition. We have to monitor for the overwhelm or shut down by these students & help them be successful. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Gina, to me this is one of the best strategies as we help the students relate the new information to an already familiar concept or activity. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Discussion Comment
Medeina, this is very true & I feel it is up to us, as instructors, to help our students develop these skills & to exercise them in their groups. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Gina, this is very true & we must monitor for this. I like to give designated roles or jobs in the groups as this can often help prevent one member from dominating the discussion over others. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Frances, this is very true & it can also help you determine if a student is engaged or not, even if they are not speaking up in class. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
James, yes & there are different levels & types of active listening & if we are going to be successful & really help our students we must develop in this area. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Jennifer, yes, by nature we are "conversational learners" & I firmly believe this needs to be brought into the classroom more than it usually is. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
