Dr. Ryan Meers

About me

I have a passion for education and especially for ensuring that all of us continue to apply what we have learned.  I am excited about the opportunity that the Lounge provides for all of us to discuss how we are applying what we have learned & to share those great ideas.

I have had a varied background from secondary education to corporate training & now working in the career college sector.  But while I have moved in different circles it has always been surrounding my passion of education.  I look forward to our conversations.

Christopher, this is so true & we need to make sure that we are tapping into the variety that will best reach our students. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Mike, tough question to answer. First thing would be to ask, are you sure they need help? Meaning, sometimes we assume they need help since they aren't speaking up, but really they're doing fine. Other than that, it may be trying to chat with them alone to encourage that interaction & encourage them to open up. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Socorro, unfortunately this seems to be a very prevalent situation for many of our students & it is best for us to be as equipped as possible in order to help them. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Williams, these are both great ideas as it helps you prepare for the class & also provides that ongoing evaluation/feedback to make sure they are truly "getting it." Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Socorro, and for all those who want to engage in more interaction, Socratic method, etc the location of the instructor is key to this & the closer I am or the more movement I engage in, typically the easier it is to engage my learners. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Russell, yes, while we will always be a little nervous & that helps with energy, the more relaxed we can be, the better we will communicate with our audience. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Maria, audience analysis is so key, as I might have great content, but if I deliver it in a way that is ineffective for this audience, I loose. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Daniela, yes, it really does hit on all of the aspects that Gen Y learners value in a class. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Barbara, yes, the connections & sense of community are important to the Gen Y student & we can use that to help them network in the field. Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
