After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy and flying for six years (including a tour in Southeast Asia), Dr. Staley earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Colorado, and won a postdoctoral fellowship to study the history of science at the U of Maryland. Joining the faculty of the Air Force Academy, he directed and taught courses in writing, speech, organizational communication, and literature. He also helped develop the renowned Air Force Executive Writing Course, visiting government and corporate headquarters for twelve years to model clear, powerful communication.
As Assistant Dean of Faculty and Professor of English, Dr. Staley administered the Academy’s Rhodes Scholarship program, served as president of the Tenure Council, directed faculty development, developed the Freshman Seminar IDEA program, and originated a critically acclaimed course in “Physics and Literature.”
In 1988 he joined the faculty of the Naval War College as Professor of Strategy and Policy, where he also served as a Research Fellow for the United Nations International Peace Academy. During this time he authored The Wave of the Future: The United Nations and Naval Peacekeeping, and with Dr. Constance Staley co-authored Communicating in Business and the Professions: The Inside Word.
As Director of Advising at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Dr. Staley helped develop the school’s new Freshman Seminar program, and spent the 1995-96 academic year as a Fulbright Fellow teaching and administering at the Kyrgyz-American University in Kyrgyzstan, in the former Soviet Union.
He has served CTU as Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of General Education, and as Professor of Humanities he has taught:

In addition he has originated several new courses at CTU, including INTD210, Science and Technology in Society, which examines the history, philosophy, and future of science and technology.
