I find it works many times to have a private discussion with a student to make them aware that you are unhappy with the distracting behavior alot of time they might not even have known that there behavior was being distracting to both you and your class and they stop.

Knowing subject material

I always try to know as much as possible about the subject I am teaching so that i can be prepared to answer any questions to the best of my ability.

Getting students Interested in Learn

One method that I like to use which works very well for me since I teach at an automotive institute is relating things to topic that interest students Like when I teach electrical courses I realate many things to the performance aspect of vehicles which works well.
