I agree that intrinsic motivation is the more powerful motivator. I think that most insturctors will agree with that concept. The big challenge is finding what will intrinsically motivate each individual student. Sometimes you can find what motivates a student intrinsically by knowing what motivates them extrinsically. In-other -words the transferance of an external stimulas to an internal stimulas.

Lecturing has been my style of instruction for maany years. These days I have been inondated with active learning, active learning and more active learning being talked about for all class room activity. Because of this module I have seen how I can still lecture but do it in a way that will be more receptive to my students.

Part of walking the walk would be: Being in class before your students Greating each with a smile and Hello - by name. Walking around class and engaging in student lives. Involving each student in class projects and participation. Employing all learning styles in your lesson (my hardest thing to do.) Encouraging all students to be better than they think they are. Promptly taking care of student problems and questions or finding someone who can. Follow-up
Having had my own sales and marketing rep. firm for many years ment creating a positive culture which would lead to success for all parties involved. Sales reps like teachers talk to each other and it only takes one to bring the rest down.

People tend to respect what they see others do not just what they say. Walking the walk is far more meaningful than just talking the talk. Doing what you say that you will do consistantly will instill trust.

I find that when I provide a real life reason for taking my course, thus making it their course, and then add the four essentials of motivation, students respone.

Dr. Covey calls it "Sharpining the Saw." See if your objectives are still really your objectives and that you are committed to reaching them. Look forward and "Keep the end in mind."
