Hi Marie, one of the complaints I get from my faculty in psychology is that they spend too much time trying to reach out to learners and it takes time away from the learners who are engaged in the course. We have moved to a process of sending 3 communications to learners to try to get them to engage and after that, they are no longer obligated to continue to try to reach out to the learner. Tina
Hi Marie, we have been using Adobe Connect for our live study sessions. The instructor and learner/s can use the video feature, so they are able to see one another to develop greater presence. Tina

Hi Marie, that is the same problem we have. It is very difficult to engage a learner if they don't show up! In addition, when we have live sessions, most of the time the learners who need them are not the ones that attend. Tina
Hi Samuel, great ideas!! I think trying to get a meeting via telephone to talk with this learner is essential. I also like your idea about helping this learner take "little steps" with success to build confidence! Tina
Hi Jody, can you elaborate on how different learning styles will determine the mode of delivery a learner chooses? Tina
Hi Shellie, I have found the same issue in the online courses I teach. I actually changed my faculty expectations to inform learners about their responsibility to review my feedback in discussions and assignments to improve performance throughout the quarter. I also set an expectation about asking questions if a learner does not understand something. Tina
Hi Jody, what type of information do you include in your faculty letter? Tina
Hi Amy, you make me smile because I felt the same way when I first started teaching online:-) Tina

Hi Amy, I appreciate your comments about the need to send "specific questions" because I have had learners send me emails stating they don't know what to do and it is difficult to give them specific feedback unless I have more information. I actually created a checklist that learners use to step through the unit activities, and there is a place for questions for each step, which helps learners acticulate to me what they've done and where they are stuck. Hi Samuel, Mike is exhibiting a false sense of confidence in his ability, so your strategy of explaining his errrors is important. I like your idea about having him reflect. One strategy you could recommend is to reflect on the scoring guides for assignments prior to submitting them to ensure he has met all of the criteria. Tina
