Michael, All good ideas! Another skill set that is important for a Director to have would be dealing with staffing issues. Depending on the size of your staff there are always issues in the work place. Being able to gain the trust and respect of your employees is also a learned skill over time. Having a motivated and happy counseling staff will go a long way to promoting good work habits and productivity. Warren Hoffman
Janet, Once again, you are right, it is important to get other offices involved in compliance. Depending on the school, once a month may be too much for everyone's schedules. Quarterly or at least semi annually would be sufficient once things are underway and hopefully running smoothly. Warren Hoffman
Janet, Yes,you would want to regularly communicate with the other offices to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to. "A regular basis" can mean many things and how often will be different at each institution depending on how well everyone communicates and if there have been any past issues that need special attention. Warren Hoffman
Ricardo, I would just add that it is a good idea to keep the staff abreast of how things are going and to make sure the know who to refer the reviewers to if the are asked any questions.¿ Warren Hoffman
Janet, Well said! Directors cannot assume that others know the regulations well enough and must keep lines of communication open to make sure that things get done correctly and timely. Warren Hoffman
Tracy, Once again I agree with you. Even the appearance of "crossover" conversations can present difficulties.
Tracy, That is good to hear! The two offices can share space and even have one person act as a receptionist for both offices. As long as the same person does not award and disburse funds.

That sounds like a good plan Tracy as long as the website and proper disclosures make the policy clear and known to everyone.

Janet, Those are all essential qualities for a Director of Financial Aid. You imply it, but excellent customer service skills and experience is really important. Warren Hoffman
Daisy, If that works for your school GREAT! Warren Hoffman
