i agree, i dont use extra credit

I have tried that extra credit route. It just makes things complicated. I agree with Charles. I consistantly deny extra credit. why give students with low drive a safety net.

You make a good point about the rationale for extra credit. I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other. I can say, however that some instructors allow extra credit - but not for slackers. It's for the ordinarily good student to keep their grades up when confronted with circumstances out of their control and that could affect their grade adversely.

Perhaps EC is more applicable in some classes than others. If the goal is learning, and a student can demonstrate improvement beyond the usual graded assignments, I can see where some instructors may be inclined to offer some degree of EC.
