Grading

Grading varys from school to school and class to class so it is important to make the details of the way you plan to grade assignments very clear to all the students.

Hi Brian:
Great. Rubrics are helpful, objective, fair, and assist the teacher provide a more accurate grade. Students should be able to apreciate that, ad also knowing where they stand in class.

Regards, Barry

I use rubrics whenever I can or spell out the requirements for the assignment so there is always a quantitative amount given to each criteria. I introduce the contents of their final grade at the beginning of the class and continue throughout the course.

Hi Francis:
Good clear expectations at the beginning of a new class session will pay off if/when there is some student dispute down the road. Sometimes the guidelines take time to consider all possible situations. I am always amazed when a student will find some loophole and make that an issue.

Regards, Barry

I make this a priority on day one. Let them know what is expected of them and what the point system and penalties are for late or missed work. Generally I will allow one missed assigement to be made up if there is good reason for the absentee.

Hi Ronnie:
Yeah, it's natural to want to know what kind of grade a student received. The best way to (try) to handle this is to give lots of instruction beforehand about how and when , and where grades will be displayed.

Regards, Barry

I have found that students are absessed with ther grades they are very impatiant about when they get ther grades

Hi Nataniel:
Giving clear guidelines at the beginning of a course can help direct students to preferred ways to earn better grades and learn the material. Sharing what has and has not worked is also a strtegy that many instructors use to illustrate to student how they can be successful.

Regards, Barry

Hi Brian:
Right. Most commonly, this can be accomplished using a course syllabus that provides as many details as needed to claerly convey expectatations. Students will perform to the level of expectations we give them.

Reagrds, Barry

If the students know how they will be evaluated they are not going to be shocked when the end of the course comes around. It also helps them to accept responsibility for their grades. If they know what they need to do to succeed at the begining, then by the end of the course they only thing left to ponder is what they have done to earn their grade in comparison with the standards presented at the begining.
