using feedback
giving quizz, tests, finals.. is one way to evaluate and assess the student level, but in class correction allows the student to see their mistakes and to learn from it.
there is no surprise and they can see the score they made.
Hi Lionel:
Hopefully students will recieve feedback constructively. In the past, some of my students felt like my feedback was like being critical, which is not me at all. But I learned from that. I now offer my advice and suggestions with a caring, helpful demeanor, and always ask, "what else can I do for you?" I think when students feel theteacher cares, they'll be more open to suggestions.

Feedbacks are the best way to have them understanding and learn from their mistake when they will have to do it again.
Hi Jenifer:
I agree. Usually testing is only for assessment. But as you describe we can use testing as an instructional component as well.

When subjects are fresh and interest is peaked just after testing is the best time to review corrections. This allows students to remember and keep notations for future reviews or testing.
Hi Edward:
Grades and points are really important to students, so it's good you appreciate the "urgency" in immediate feedback.

Grading tests as soon as possible to gain feedback is important to the student. To regain the frame of mind that caused them to answer incorrectly allows them to re-enforce the correct answers and to gain the thought process to work through issues and answer problems correctlty in the future. The clicker technology is good, but your method is simple, low cost and effective.
Hi Edward:
Yes, I agree. What you describe is a powerful instructional straegy that often gets lost in the more rutine aspects of teaching a class. I hope you get the opportunity to use it as often as applicable.

Humanistic responses to problems in the classroom provide the student with examples of 'leading by example' and how to rationalize their way though potential problems.
Hi Paul:
Your recognition that an instructor error may have occurred is a sign of a fair, reasonable instructor, the kind most students would like to have. It also subtley reflects that teachers are only human, too!

I don't have access to the clicker technology, but I like to go over the exam as soon as possible and point out common wrong answers, and why that question might be answered that way. Of course if a very large number answer incorrectly, I might then rethink the study guide and other supporting materials so that there's a better understanding of the question.
Hi Edward:
Good - student self recognition is always better than being told, as in "you did something wrong". Good comment!

I agree that in class correction provides an opportunity for the student to recognize possible errors in judgement or answer seletion. Further, it allows the student to reformulate their thoght process.
Hi Larent:
Great! Instant feedback. I like that.
Our on-ground classes use "clickers' - electronic remote controls that allow a teacher to project a question on the boad and then students choose the answer using their hand-held remote control device. Then, the answer is viewed showing how many chose A, how many chose B, etc. Then the correct answer can be given after the instructor and class has discussed the question thoroughly. Of course, not every class or institution is going to have access to this technology, but it's a good example of technology available to provide instant feedback.
