Variety of Assessments
Beneficial for the students. Some students enjoy and excel at research. Others are more comfortable with studying and take a test. Practical testing truly confirms that learning has occured.
This will give all types of students the opportunity to be successful.
I agree. A variety of assessments will also boost a persons confidence in a subject which then will keep them engaged. But the thing I have to remember as an instructor is part of my job is preparing them for the national certification, so I try to assess in the same format to better prepare them.
I agree Beth, Teaching in a Culinary school allows for these types of assesments. Students grades are based on written quizes as well as practical cooking and baking exams. this allows the student to know what areas of strenghts and weakness's exist and better prepares them for the assesments.

Yes, variety aids the instructor develop and uncover the preferred method each student learns. Good instructors will teach to the individual styles as much as is possible.
