Reasons for evaluating students
What are some reasons for evaluating students?
Larissa,
My belief is the evaluation is almost as important as the delivery of course content.

Rosalie,
The more methods of evaluation provides the best opportunity to guage and measure learning.

A student should be evaluated so the instructor knows if the student is learning. If there isn't an evaluation an instructor may assume that the student knows everything being taught when they really do not.
I do agree on using different types of evaluation for students to see how they are grasping the material and see their strong and weak points. In return this also becomes an assessment for me as an instructor on how I can improve my style in making it more effective for the students.
There are many different reasons for evauluating students, one is to see where they are on a learning level, and another is to help them reach the learning level that best suits them.
William,
There are many reasons students do poorly on exams, effectiveness of instruction is among them. I do lots of quizzes, oral questioning, exam review, pretesting, and provide study guides. Still, I'd agree that if most students bomb an exam, it may be a sign that either the test questions are unclear or perhaps more time was needed prior to the graded assessment.

One of the greatest reason for evaluating students is also to see how you did as a teacher getting the material across. If all the students did bad on a test. It is most likely you did not hit the mark on your lesson.
I think by evaluating students you are assessing there progress
Sue,
Yes, this is where skills testing can be beneficial, as applicable to the course work being measured.

Evaluating students lets the instructor know where the student needs improvement, or how the student has improved over time. With evaluations the instructor can fine tune their teaching material.
To get a clear picture of what the students have learned. I place a greater importance on the practical test, most students in my class do much better showing me they can do the job rather than answer questions on a written test.
Jessie,
Yes. Without the feedback, students are really unable to determine where more or less effort may be required in their study plans.

There are several reasons for evaluating students. One reason is to see what they know (pretest), another is to see what they are learning (during the learning ) and to see what they have learned (formative).
Yvonne,
Often, an instructor will also see their own effectiveness in the instructional process when they provide feedback to their students.

good post . It is very important to have an evalution each students. An instructor needs to know if any special help is needed for a student..
Krista,
Right. Concurrent grade information supports forward motion and encouragement to students try their best.

If there is no incentive to learn, pass vs. fail vs. graduate vs. career, then not many people would take their education seriously.
Linda,
Yes, students need timely feedback in order to measure their progress and also generate plans for improvement. If needed.

I feel it is important to evaluate students to know if they are really understanding the lecture or just too afraid to say they don't understand and therefore have their fellow students look down at them. This way by giving a test it reflects how they are grasping the material and also lets you know where the weakeness are in your student.
