Hi Connal:
Your categories sound fine. The test of effectiveness is if they measure student learning evening, fairly, and consistently.

I teach a practical class. I have a few homework assignments and a comprehensive final exam. Otherwise, a majority of the grade comes from daily performance, which I outline at length on the first day of class and in the syllabus. Do the students follow directions; do they hide mistakes or take responsibility; are they respectful of myself and fellow students; are they applying previous knowledge; etc. The exam is demanding, but it asks questions that graduates should be able to answer on the spot in the "real world". Also, students keep a journal and hand that in on the last day, outlining their daily learning and activities.
