extra credit is needed cause sometimes students do try their best and need a little more of a boost!

Bonus questions or dropped quizzes (lowest quiz score) makes sense to me. Just giving extra points may motivate some low performers, but all they'll get is points. What about the missed information that contributed to their low performance?
EC in very small amounts, if at all, should be given, in my opinion. My area is medical, so I feel no corners can be cut to pass students or raise a grade - harm to others could be the result.

Extra credit can be a rewarding tool used by the instructor to motivate the student to try harder. Sometimes the student will be able to better understand the extra credit assignment.
