Grading Tests
I state what I expect at beginning of each class that I teach. If they are late, so many points are taken off. If they miss a test , so many points are taken off and a different version is given as well.

By keeping the student informed in the manner you've described, it allows the student the chance to learn from any possible mistakes they've made.
Some instructors believe that it is valuable to review the rationale of tests in case the student missed it.

Many educational organizations use a similar technique of deducting points for an infraction of some kind.
I think you hit on the most important point in your statement, that being you've explained the expectations to the class beforehand so they know what to expect.

i inform student the beginning of the term how test or graded, and give them a example of the points system, and included when they miss a test and have to make it up the points taken and how that effects their total grade.
