Grades

Grades are a instrumental on evaluating class room material but hands on labs and soft skills are equally important

I work in a grad clinic which is pass or fail. The only way not to pass is not to show up or do nothing. By this time in their training they are motivated to utilize the clinic for learning. I'm learning new technology skills to share with them for enrichment.

Hi Antonio:

One of the best methods for grading systems is to develop a rubric that is presented to the students the first day of class (or as soon as possible) so the student knows the expectations.

Hi Jackie:

With any style of testing, it might be a good idea to review the material and apply it to a real-life scenario (if you can).

Also, the advantage of evaluating and then reviewing a test with the group is that it might allow a student to gain a better understanding of the rationale they need to answer similar questions that will occur on future exams. Also, it might trigger new questions about the subject matter that will help to stimulate a better understanding of the concepts overall.

Having a rubric with expectations clearly noted makes grading easy. It works for groups too because each group has a goal and it is easy to say what job each student had and what they did to reach the goal.

Grading is an important factor , especially when students working in groups , there are all some that leave the work for others to do while they sit back a copy others , giving a good score to some one that works hard and giving a lesser score to some one that is not trying is the only fair way to handle things .

Hi Gavin:
Setting grading standards varies from course to course. The key is to assure whatever weight or method is used, learning is measured fairly and accurately.

I try to combine the two as best I can. I feel that there is more value in the practical application of the skills that the student will be required to perform in the field so I have a tendency to weight that portion of the exam accordingly.

I agree, hands on evaluation for the students trade will make the lecture and course of study come together.
