Evalualtions

This should be an ongoing thing in the classroom. The student should get an update at least every two weeks to monitor their grades. This assists them in feeling that they are in the loop of everything. This not only assists them with having a little control over there grades it also allows them to see what they need to study and work on more.

Hi Kenya:

I think using the midterm evaluation form you mentioned is a good idea. In any grading system, I also think it's important to create a grading rubric and present it to the class the first day so they know what to expect.

Dr. Westling,
How would you recommend that students be evaluated at a midterm and final point, when the course their taking is a pass or final. Because at my school we only do final evaluations for the students to let them know if their passed or failed the class. In the pass I've made up a midterm evaluation form, because students I feel need to know how their doing throughout the class. But the other issue I find to is when the students find out its a pass or fail course and its not a letter grade they're attitude is one of this class really doesnt matter. Please help me.

Hi Jane:
Ongoing evaluation would be ideal. I agree frequent and personal is best.

Actually, our lessons could become a version of continuous evaluation. Each lesson should contain thought questions and example that allow the student to appy what what was presented. Then each day, assessment to what the student retained or applied would be tested. One thing, those students would learn to be critical thinkers and apply original thought into situations.

It should be ongoing as it reduces stress on students and shows how they may or may not need to improve.

Hi Dionne:
I too believe evaulation - at least status updates - should be frequent and personal. Assessing a student's performance also gives me an opportunity to encourage, and offer suggestions for improvements while there is still time for the needed corrections to make a difference in the final grade. The personalization contributes to trust and sometimes respect, too.

Dionne, I totally agree with your statement. Not only is it good for the students, it is also an excellent measuring tool for instructors to evaluate themselves.
