"LATE" Policy
All of my students are in the health professions. A surgical technologist is not going to get credit for any late work and most likely they will be terminated. For that reason, i DO NOT OFFER ANY CREDIT FOR LATE WORK OR missed exams or quizzes!
Michael,
Good discussion. I agree that circumstances can impact complete adherence to a strict late policy. Many teachers will simply assess a "late" penalty for (i.e. 5% off), or something similar. Not all graded components are the same. For instance, I would look at a request to turn in homework late differently from a request to take a test late. Part of the classroom policy needs to factor in the equity, or fairness, among student colleagues. A deployment, as an example of an advance notice of pending delays may have stipulations that the teacher and student can come to an agreement about. Yet although significant life events can occur during a course, ultimatly students have to be accountable for completion of assignments as a measure of their learning.

After reading this discussion thread I had to comment on the assumption that these late policies apply to students in a traditional "brick and mortar" setting. Just the same, an understood late policy should apply in an electronic only setting. However, like this course material suggests, there are instances when/where the material cannot be turned in on time. Some online universities and instructors are very liberal with their late policies if they are made aware of situations well in advance. I personally have benefitted from a liberal late policy as a large majority of coursework was completed while serving in the military in less than desirable places. So, I agree one must be a late policy but it should be based on your setting and be subjective enough to accomodate most students.
Hi Leigh,
Well said, and consistent with with most employment or work settings.

I agree, you will not get paid for time that you are late, so you should not get credit for quizzes you miss for being late. The reality is that someone else would be happy to have their job that will be more reliable.
Hi Jeanette:
Most institutions allow the instructor to create their own expectations in this regard. That said, it's important to let the student know those expectations on the first day of class.

Hi Cassie:
Outside of pre-existing institutional guidelines, institutions usually leave it to the instructor for allowing make-up work or not. That said, what does it teach the student if we allow them the chance to make-up assignments anytime they want?
Perhaps the best idea is a compromise – if we allow an assignment to be made up or turned in late, it should have a deduction in value.

Hi Duane:
The nice thing about having a policy of “no make-up quizzes†at the outset of the class is that it creates an expectation for the students, and supports the importance of being in class everyday.

late is late, there is no make up work. when you are late for your job, you dont get paid for being late. accept responsibility for your actions.
I allow students to make up only one exam. A make-up exam day is established at the beginning of the quarter and the student has to request permission to take a make up exam.
Hi Jason:
My feeling about credit is, as adults, there are expectations. In the real world of work, there are extreme consequences when assigned duties are not follwed. So should it be in the classroom.
Regards, Barry
I agree. My students are given enough notice about thier projects and homework so i offer no credit for late work
I have also used the policy that students cannot make-up hands on activities. Since they know this from the start of class, there is no agruments.
Having material that can ony be done in class and cannot be made up, students choose to show up and stay the duration of class.
I agree with not being allowed to show up late.At some jobs they deduct from your pay and coming to class is the same as getting paid.
I allow the students to make up 1 exam during the quarter. This has to be done on their own time however. I also do not allow any make up's on quizzes and most of my quizzes are not announced. This way it encourages the student to come to class and be prepared. As far as homework if it is not handed in at the beginning of class it automatically recieves a loss of half of the points. I only allow 2 late assignments and after that its worth 0. Since we do alot of hands on activities in class the students are also aware that they do not get to make up any points for hands on activities.
I agree i teach Criminal Justice classes and you can be suspended or terminated from your job for not showing up or showing up late.
