Late assignments
Students need to be responsible for the actions. They should be able to make up the test or assignments, but late points should be added to assignments, and a revised test given when they return.
Debra,
Helping students is important. In that effort fairness to all students should be considered. I think when students communicate difficulties in advance there will be more opportunity to help them with assignments in in a proactive manner (having a baby would seem to permit ample preplanning regarding assignments).

we have a no make -up policy at our school ,but sometimes life doesnot go as planned only make up i will take is a project with a very good reason ( i had my baby ) and a 10 point deduction if handed in next week
I take 50% off homework if it is one class late. Our school has a no quiz make up policy and a 3 day after the class to make up a test. Most students do not take advantage of the test make up policy. I think no make up policy encourages students to come to class and do their work.
I agree with your statement. I take 10% of an assignments value per day. After 10 days, the assignment will be recorded as a zero. I provide them with alternate tests and quizzes. I find that frequent absentees tend to rely heavily on their ability to make the material up. However, I know that some schools have a no exam or quiz make-up policy.
