late homework

I think there are many good ways to handle late homework. I always listen to the students reasons and give them the benefit of the doubt. Although points are taken off. If it becomes a habbit with the student, then I give them no credit.

Marcy,
Using the work setting, there are raely opportunities to just get downgraded for completing assignments on tiome. On the other hand, if homework represents only a small portion oif their grade, maybe bit really makes little difference. The main thing is "do students learn the material?".

For every day homework is missed it's an automatic 10% deduction. Im not sure if I like that or not. I feel like the students have the syllabus, they are responsible for turning in the assignments on time. If not, the should get a zero.

Adult learners tend not to cheat in my experience. I agree that adequate preparation dissuades cheating.

Personally, I don't like students to turn in late homework, however, you should listen to the reason. One of my students she claimed her baby was in the hospital for both times she was late. However, some students are so overwhelmed by all the responability of muti-tasking that you have to use good judgement but still be firm. Each student is different and bring to the table their own reasoning and logic. Making exceptions for one student and not for another can cause a conflict.I struggle over some of these areas.

I allow for late homework only once and I would make sure this information is on their syllibus. Taking the required points off is also outlined so there is no question as why this is done. I want the student to learn responsibility and the outcome of their actions.

It seems that you may want to check the student’s reason for not having homework and allow that to determine the punishment. If the student seems to have these issues on the regular then you adjust the punishment accordingly.
