Gradebook
My experience with electronic gradebooks is that they can be very limiting in how you structure your course grading and difficult to alter. I've had to completely change how I grade one course as a result. I greatly prefer keeping a spreadsheet personally developed for each course.
Hi Sharon:
Teachers organize their classes in avariety of ways. If there is access to electronic grading, that'll be virtually instantaneous. Personnaly, I think students should be accountable for keeping track of their grades. But that's not to say we can't supply them with the needed information when requested.

I THINK STUDENTS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO ACCESS GRADES AT ANYTIME, KEEP A COPY OF GRADES WITH YOU
I use Engrade on line and it is great. The system allows you to create your own grading system, etc.
During the first class session, I hand out the individual students log in access and they have the opportunity to monitor their grades and activity throughout the course. This also keeps me on my toes for posting grades.
We have a system at our school where are students are able to login at any time and see how their grades are.
My personal experience it is good to have both the electronic gradebook and the one you carry with you. In addition, I have a backup in my hard drive. My students have knowledge ofhow they are doing, we have progress reports and when a student is not passing they will be aware.
