Grading studen'ts test as soon as possible
I have found that is it so true that when you give a student their grade as soon as possible, they are mot only so relieved to know their grade, but then they can let go and move on. They can also ask guestions, that may be of help to them for the next test.
Beatrice,
Students want feedback, and I agree, the sooner the better. If added resspect occurs that's great. But even if not, still it's valuable to be able to offer students grades as well as corrections needed or additional clarification.

Yes, getting score back to students as soon as possible enhance the respect students have for you as an instructor.
Hi Ashlee,
Good deal. Also, hearing correct information repeated helps retention. If we're honest, we recognize that occasionally a wrong anser choice or faulty question has been inadvertenly included and so reviewing also helps identy teacher mistakes and provide instant correction. I think students appreciate and respect their teachers who do this.

I believe reviewing a test right after the students take it is beneficial for the learning process. They usually ask for explanations of the right answer and that usually helps commit it to memory.
Hi Laura:
Very true. Instructors have different viewpoints on the efficiency of this topic. To avoid confusion, it may be a good idea to tell the students what to expect in this regard on the first day of class.

Hi Vilma:
Yes, students want instantaneous feedback (sometimes hard to do and perhaps unrealistic). Reviewing test results does provide clarification of incorrect answers, and sometimes a dialog to strengthen understanding. You're right, the sooner the better.

Hi Glenn:
Good. Sharing student status early on gives the best opportunity for improvemnt to occur before its too late to make a difference.

grading as soon as possible helps lessen the tension for students that are on the "bubble" as far as if they are passing the test or not
I find it very important to give students their grades immediately. It not only allows them to move on, but if they have questions or concerns about the exam, they can express it.
Hi Steve:
Boy, I attest to the value of getting student's grades out as soon as possible. They appreciate knowing when, and the sooner the better. Being able to discuss performance is great if the opportunity presents, and that act can allow us to show we care, are concerned about their success, and are interested in assisting them to do thier best.

I grade exams same day (if at all possible) and give students their scores same day. There are also times when I can review their tests immediately--but a next day review is done at the latest. I find this does several things. As you noted, relief is probably the biggest thing on their part (I passed!!). If they need to retest, this will help them see where their weak points are and help them prepare for the retest.... much better prepared.
I prefer to grade the students test quickly so that they stop asking for their tests back everyday. They are anxious as to their results and this interefers with their ability to concentrate on the lessons at hand. And yes, I do agree that they are more relaxed after they realize that they have passed their tests, or if they have failed, they realize that they need to do better next time.
I agree that handing an exam back to the students as soon as possible not only gives them piece of mind, but also shows the students what they need to work on. I move on to the next chapter right away, and students know they can come meet with me if they did not do well on the exam before learning new information.
Also, waiting to grade them would not benefit the students because until you grade it and hand it back they may not care about it as much because they had forgotten the information.
I agree I do try to get tests to them right away by next class session and they really seem to respond to it. They appreciate it and it keeps me on track too.
Upon completion of the test I give each student a red pen and we go through the test for them to grade themselves. I let them know that I will doubt check their grading and if I find any irregularities, I will subtract double points. There has never been an issue with students cheating. This way they know their results and we can discuss any questions that might have been misinterrupted. I grade subjective questions (essay or short answer) and return test with final grades within a couple of days of the test.
Grading tests as soon as possible is not only benificial to the students but also to you as an instructor. We have a lot to accomplish and little time to do it. Waiting to grade things or put them in the grade book throws you off track as well.
