Testing

Testing should be a gauge of understanding and not a scorecard.

Mark,
There are all sorts of ways to assess student knowledge. If I find too many students perform poorly using one method of assessment, I look to another. That's being flexible and I think it makes for better classes.

I agree, many times ive asked the same questions randomly ant the students seem to answer correctly.at test time they the seem to freeze.

Daniel,
Yep! Any good test should measure learning. I have often thought if it were allowed, I could just ask questions of students, and assign a grade from that. This is the Socratic method, (and it worked for him). Unfortunately, our educational industry frowns on this method as it is very subjective and difficult to document perfornance. But that doesn't mean we can't still use the method in our classrooms for instruction (i.e., where no grade is involved).

I surely agree with your statement, the important part is what the student has learned and comprehended.

Roderick,
Right! Emaphasize student learning while also assessing our methods of delivering that content.

It should also be an indicator to us as instructors to see if we are presenting the material in the best way possible to foster student learning, understanding and retention of the key concepts.

I agree. tests at the heart of it should measure your students knowledge. Maybe they need extra help or maybe they will need to repeat the course.

Testing should knowledge and understanding of the material covered.

Test are a great way to see what information a student has obtained in the class that they are being taught.

Robert,
I agree. In all the varieties of ways we can test, the measure of student learning should be at it's base.
