Why Evaluations are important

Student should be evaluated through out their learning experience. Evaluating gives the student a great idea where they are doing great and where they need to improve. And for those student who have a low self esteem, a great evaluation can be a great boost..

Khouloud,
Right! If we have truly taught, then we have to measure to what degree. Evaluations provide one vehicle to do so.

Indeed, evaluations merely enable students to comprehend their status as learners. Subsequently, evaluations encourage students to enhance their learning efforts as well as improve their grades. As a result, evaluations are the key to successfully communicating with students regarding their learning outcomes.

Judy,
Adult learners in particular want and expect to know their status - good or bad. Personal sharing of information, along with advice for improvement (if needed) and supportive encouragement can convey a sentiment that the instructor cares about the students success and achievement.

I think evaluations are critical to a students success. I am a student and I know how important knowing where I am grade wise is very important to me. Students need to know what they are learning and how much of it they are retaining evaluation is the only way for this to happen. When a student has a good grade they often want to keep that grade up and this will make them work even harder. On the other hand if a student did not do well on something and they know it they will be able to work harder next time and will be able to bring their grade up. I really think it is important to give students a very detailed evaluation so that they know what they are excelling at and what they need to improve on. I think it shows the student that the instructor cares about the class and the student when evaluations are done correctly.

Billie,
Yes - we ca use the time to share not only grade information but also to add support, advice, and encouragement. This conveys the teacher cares about the student learning.
