Retake

I would like to know everyone opinion on retake exams. Because I would like to issue re-takes and give the student a chance to improved their study skills.

Emad,
There are many variable at play here. My opinion is this is best left up to the instructor to decide what will work best to obtain a fair and accurate grade.

i used to do the retake test after a certain period to give the student enough time to study and complete the missed knowledge from the course. After that I prepare another exam of the same level and consider the student's grade for that exam

Tiffany,
Policies vary among intstitutions. That said, my opinion is no retake should be allowed if it is for the purpose of determining a grade, as a grade reflects learning that has (or has not) occurred. Why would any honest instructor want to artificailly raise a students grade that they did not earn.

Instructors should only allow a retake in extra-ordinary situations and or if student has special learning needs and have taken all necessary steps (i.e.tutoring) to qualify for retake.

Jopha,
I have given retake exams, although not usually for credit. I can see merit in giving a small amount of credit for students retaking an exam, possibly even using their notes and books. I can see this could potentially offer the student an opportunity to reinforce the information they got cortrect and correct any information that was missed.

Offering retake exams can be good for the student. This would give them an opportunity to become better acquainted with the material on which they are being tested. Both exam scores could be averaged thereby giving the student an opportunity to improve the overall score for that particular exam.

Khaison,
This really can only be addressed by senior decison makers at your school. That said, I tend not to favor retesting on major tests (no make up at all on quizzes). However, one exercise I have done in the past (not anymore, and was infrequent when I tried it) is after I give an exam, I allow the students to immediately retake the test with open books and notes (not each other). Then, I regrade the second test and award a small percentage of their second test, and add those points to the toal exam score. Example: 100 point test. First try, 83%. Retake, 99%. 99% X 3% = 3 points added to the 83 = 86%. The rationale I used was the student would see their own errors, and correct information would be discoverd on their own. Plus, a small "bonus incentive" was recieved fore the effort.

Sylvia,
For me, the real key is student learning and how best to measure it. We can have rules, but if we are interested in student learning there should be policies aligned with the student demonstrating that knowledge. Preventing a student takiung a test seems harsh, but I know each institution has to do what works best for them.

retakes are usually the same test exspecially if you gave out a study guide to assist the students. taken off 10% general encourage the student to be their, and after the first returning date if they don't test then they can't take the test
