extra learning opportunities
Finding ways to expand the depth of projects tends to keep faster students engaged.
Linda,
Interesting assignment. I like the idea of handwritten, as these days that is being diminished more in favor of word processing (with spell check and grammar correction.

I am a huge fan of writing projects. In each class I assign a componet; key terms or a short research paper that must be handwritten and spelling counts. It may take a little longer, because they have to dig a little deeper so I assign them early in the term. I also encourage feedback from them in the form of "nothing you say will be held against you"
Michael,
Terrific! Although reciting back recall or application facts provides one dimension of students demonstrating their knowledge, getting them to open up and share opinions prtomotes an aspect of critical thinking. Independent thought is beneficial when students move to the work setting. Therefore, assisting them here and there is a very dynamic and creative activity for you as their instructor to assign.

I ensure that when projects that involve writing, such as research papers, I build in a component that requires their opinions on the topic. I find that students tend to respond a bit better when they know it's ok to express their thoughts in a non-judgmental situation.
Bruce,
I like projects too. It gives students an opportunity to express themselves or demonstrate learning in a manner that is quite different from most other assignments. Also, it usually invlovels multiple senses, and that creates a better retention of information then other kinds of assignments.
