Informing students of status in course
Placement test before the beginning of the class will help the instructor prepare the course materials and exam.
John,
This sounds terrific. Students thrive on knowledge about their performance -- grades and points are like currency, they almost can never get enough!

We give progress reports after every test so the student knows where they are at all through the course.
Harry,
Sometimes this falls into the "other duties as assigned", when instructors have busy schedules. Nonetheless, time spent reviewing progress pays dividends in terms of improved student performance, and trust and respect for the instructor.

Informing students of class progress gives them a heads up so they know exactly what they need to do to be successful. There is time to talk and plan so the student knows what needs to be done.
Sarai,
For me, what's most important is the ability to share current and accurate information regarding a students performance. If correction is needed, I can give it. If assistance, explanation, or suggestions are needed, I can give it. Also, this gives me time to offer support and encouragement, and students nearly always appreciate kind words of care and concern for their success.
