Poor exam scores
When the whole class scores poorly the objectives need to be covered and reviewed then retest.
Gail,
If our measurement and grading system is sound, integrating more varied and alternative learning methods into the daily delivery and presentation creates the best opportunity for the most students to get most out of our classes. Sometimes it seems easier just to do the basic classroom (lecture, homework, quiz and test), but I find only a few students can really learn all they need with just these basics.

I utilize all of these methods. I am very passionate about case studies as I feel that the concepts come alive for the students. Small group discussion of a concept also is effective!
Fabiola,
Some suggestions: A pretest. A review by their instructor or groups of students. Small group discussions. Or, a case studies about interesting situations they're likely to find in the work setting.

What would you do if time doesn't permit this. There are certain subjects that are difficult to make interesting at the end of the day to students that have worked all day and have a short attentions span..
Omesa,
Reviewing is a great idea. Students need to know what they missed, and why.

If he whole class fail a test as an instructor I will havebeveryone get out the notes and briefly go over and review and wite down 2 question s that you dont understand.
Mary Lou,
This is a good method if time allows. Checking for understanding (CFU) as the class proceeds is another way to make sure students get the information. CFU works by presenting just a little information, then asking questions randomly. If it appears students are missing key information, that's the time to review. Then the instructor moves on for a bit and again asks questions. The repetitious process keeps everyone's attention and gives a better chance that most students will understand and retain the information the instructor wants.
