Students can be rewarded with extra credit when they work hard.

Randy,
Seems like a good approach, especially for math-oriented problems.

I do not believe in "extra credit" in the traditional sense. However, I do offer two or three additional problems at the end of each math chapter test which can yield as many as 5 bonus points (added on to the test score total). These problems are intended to foster a little "stretch thinking". This means some students may earn scores of 101 to 105... our electronic grade book accepts such scores.

Angela,
Personally, I'm not a fan for giving extra credit. Also, when good students see their lesser performing classmates getting credit that boosts their grade, that can contribute to animosity among the classmates. I think a couple of bonus questions on a test, or maybe dropping the lowest quiz score (when there are at least 8-10 or more quizzes) is probably OK, because these measure recognize learning, whereas extra credit above and beyond stated grading can skew grades artificially.

How would you apply extra credit to a 100% grade?
