As outlined, extra credit can be a slippery slope. I don't incorporate it into my classes.
Extra credit is fine but should not hold to much wait on the final grade.
Extra credit is not an option in my course the tasks must be performed correctly or they must be redone untill correct. In our industry making mistakes can be very detrimental to the buisness and the consumer.
I totally agree. I myself give very little extra credit this prevents students from relying on the extra points to pass the class
To my mind, extra credit can be applied at the end of the final examination. If the student gets the questions correct, then the points count, which would serve to increase the final score. Extra points for extra credit would not decrease from the final score if incorrect.
I think extra credit is nice to give to students to help boost the grade a little.
Some time extra credit inspire the students to work harder. But my policy is they will get extra crdit only if the student finish the assigned work on time.
I am not a fan of exra credit, this may imply to students that if they fail at the required information they can do extra things to pass the course. My feelings are that if I am going to say that a student has the skills required for a particular course or career they should actually have them.
I think it can give someone incentive to do even better, but too much extra credit I feel is just a way to help them get by.
I have offered extra credit a few times for in class pop quizzes and find it amazing that I immediately have the students' attention and participation- even those who don't seem to care about the regular credit. I don't think extra credit is beneficial to students.
I rarely give extra credit. I used to give it more frequently when I first started teaching and found that the students became dependent on it. It is my opinion that if given it should be used very sparingly and provide only 1 or 2 additional points to the students' score.
Our school has a policy against awarding extra credit points. We have found that this encourages them to rely on the extra points instead of just doing well on the homework or test the first time. This seems to be the case even if the point system does not cause the student to pass on extra credit points.
EXTRA CREDIT IS AN EXCELLENT MOTIVATOR FOR STUDENTS. IT ALSO ALLOWS THEM TO BE MORE CREATIVE, KNOWING THAT THEIR EXTRA EFFORT WILL BE 'REWARDED'.
I have yet to use extra credit in culinary school. I wonder how I might incorporate that into my curriculum. Make the student do extra dishes?
I prefer to not give extra credit. However, if I allow it and assign it, it is often an assignment that is comprehensive to the course. I expect them to use every thing we have learned to that point in their assignment.
extra credit is a motivation killer! use sparingly, in execptional cercumstances. some may sleep though the course and pass using the extra credit points.
I use extra credit as an added method of engaging my students in learning activities. We play games to review for tests, like Family Feud, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Students earn extra credit points for answering review questions correctly. Those points can be saved and used as needed to improve grades on class assignments and quizzes. Some games, like Family Feud, involve teams, so they also foster team work and team spirit among the students. Sometimes I appoint students to lead the games and give the student leaders extra credit. This helps students develop confidence in their knowledge and sometimes helps me identify good instructors of the future.
My students love extra credit, if they need to make up low grades or the like to be creative
I do not give extra credit at all it can cause too many issues.
I use extra credit as a tool to get students to listen better in lectures. Frequently during lectures I say, "this would be a good e c question". Usually it is not directly related to what the text dictates, but some little tidbit that I have experienced in the industry. This way, the students have to be present to get it, and they have to be alert when I say the "magic" words. Also, it is usually only worth 1 point, and I will only have 2 or 3 ec points available for a 40-50 point test.
So, It can bump their score a little, but not drastically.
