Counseling Sessions
I have found that by giving a student coaching/counseling sessions during week 3, 6, 9 and finally 12, it allows the student to know where they are and improve in areas that would need to be improved upon.
David,
Students like stories and hearing about situations regarding the work setting they're preparing for. What's good is that once we have the students interest, they're ripe for teaching and instructing.

i would have to agree that bring in personal life experances make the information stick so much more. As well if you show interest into what the students are into they seem to want to communicate with you more.
Margaret,
I think better instructors try to view their students holistically, focusing on course study, but considering personal life factors that may be interfering with progress in the class as well. It is sometimes difficult to know what advice or suggestions to give, so in the advising about class performance, an instructor can discuss progress and try to get the student to willingly volunteer information. Some students freely share their personal issues, other will not. Certainly, the more information that is known can positively contribute to support, encouragement and sound advice.

I find counseling sessions to often be rewarding in that I learn more about the student and work harder to connect based on the working adult, family, or life situations.
Steven,
This is great! For the length of your terms, I think this is the a good number of visits with your students, sequenced out so as to provide information about their staus and grades, and also gives enough time for the students to make needed corrections. What I like the most is the personal contact these students get from their instructor.
