Grading

I find grading is very essential to learning,
without grades there is no way to evaluate a
student, or know if there is any concerns. With
grades you have better idea how to start to
address the concerns. I found taking the student
aside ask what area of concern if is the topic or
sometimes it is an issue outside school,in that
case the student can be refered to the right
person.

Cory,
This makes sense, especially in career school training. Comprehensive exams have a purpose too. But like anything, I try to assess my audience, determine the best way to conduct class, and attempt to achieve the best results, given the conditions at the time, resources available, prior learning, and student backgrounds.

I believe that if we give more tests that are smaller we can focus on the material we are teaching and the students do not mind them as much because they do have to invest hours of prep time and can concentrate on the material better.

David,
There's a saying that "teachers haven't taught if students haven't learned". And while there are obvious limitations to this statement, there's also a nugget of truth there. Therefore, grading is a part of the learning process. Measurement of learning is as key as the instruction itself.
