Extra Cradit

Is that OK for giving extra credit to all the assessment include quiz?

Richard,
Many instructors and institutions have followed this same action.

Barry Westling

Our institution discontinued extra credit period.

Mahmood,
I'm not a fan of extra credit; however I realize that in some classes it may helpful. I never give it to boost grades when required course work has not been completed, as that only rewards marginal, mediocre work.

Barry Westling

Extra credit should be given only id required.

Amandeep,
Yes, we should all we can to help students learn. If I just give away points to help raise poor grades, I'm probably not really contributing to their learning much.

Barry Westling

Extra crdit can be beneficial if the class is not doing well and to keep the students still interested in the course Beacuse as an instructor we dont want to set the student to failure. Our best effeort is to help them learn.

Sharon,
I agree. To be fair to all the diligent students who did complete all assignments, extra credit in this situation will actually reward students for not doing their assigned work. I choose to mostly avoid extra credit requests.

Barry Westling

I don't give extra credit. I use an online grade book monitored by the administration. It is very difficult to monitor extra credit. Our administration requires students to have completed all thier assignments and quizzes before allowing for extra credit. Most students who ask for extra credit are those who have missing assignments.

Penny,
I personally don't think that giving extra credit to students measures their actual academic ability. Since I started teaching for one year, I haven't given any extra points to my students.

Gary,
I agree and believe this is a sound method to allow students to demonstrate their understanding in their words, without prompting from the instructor.

Barry Westling

When I give extra credit it is usually on a midterm exam and is only worth 1 or 2 points. However the student must think critically in an essay or short answer type question because I feel that answering a question is just too simple. Students should put in some effort and think critically for extra credit.

Penny,
Personnaly I shy away from extra credit in any component of the course. I want to measure learning received, not necessarily points earned. Extra credit can skew the measurement of learning.
