I feel that the student should always be aware of their staus in the course at all times. With new technology, we are able to post the students grades and they can see them as soon as we post them. I always make sure to ask often if anyone has any questions or concerns about their grades. If the student is able to see their grade in progress at all times, it will show them wether or not they have to start paying attention more. Once a students grade is getting close to a D, I meet with them indivudually and discuss their grades and try to come up with ideas to help improve their grades.

I think they need to know where they stand, so they have an idea of how they are grasping the material.

I think that knowing your grade is the first step toward managing it. If students are aware that they need to get a certain score on a test in order to pull up their grade, they will be that much more diligent in studying to achieve that score.

It is essential that student progress be part of the coursework for continued success.

Brenda,
True, progress and encouragement can help convey student progress. Most classes have learning objectives that will be measured along the way and students must know where they stand in their journey to that important destination.

To let them know where they stand and always room for improvement. Each student has their own goals and therefore must be allowed to achieve them if at all possible.

To let them know what their strenghths are and what areas they may need work. It also shows that we care enough to praise when we need to especially when they are having a difficult time with the course.

David,
Right. Information about progress along with suggestions, encouragement and being willing to offer advice is really as necessary as providing daily lesson material.

Students require an assessments of thier knowledge during the course so that they know if they are accomplishing the goals and tasks appropriatly. They will understand achievments and failures. Without this knowledge the student will not have any idea of thier progress.

Michelle,
This is great!. Weekly reports are frequent and regular enough to intitute change if needed and would allow the instructor to intervene with weaker performing students early on.Students ought to appreciate the effort you put into informing your students of their progress.

Donna,
Sure, adult students in oarticular wnat to know sooner than later where they stand in the class. My preference is to meet with students personally and individually because I can show my encouragement and hope for their success better that way. Also advice and suggestions for improvement can be conveyed along with the routine grade information.

Keeping students informed of their status in the class helps to reduce their stress and enables them to keep track of any missing assignments that they may have. I usually hand out a weekly progress report to my students as a way of keeping them informed.

It is important to keep students informed of their course status because they need to know if there is an area that they can improve. They also need to know where they stand grade wise, so that they can take on additional work if needed to bring their grade up to where it needs to be.

Lisa,
Yes, current, regular, and frequent discussions are the best way to keep students informed. This tends to prevent surprises or lesser than expected final grades.

Richard,
Like a journey, giving current report of status or performance helps students steer their direction so as to reach their desired destination in a successful manner

It is important to inform the students of their progress so therefore they won't feel that all of their efforts were wasted. What I mean by theis is, as instructors, we can give a considerable amount of work to complete, but it is disconcerting to the students when they don't find out how they're doing until the very end of the course.
I had a few students come to me saying how they appreciated how I returned graded assignments promptly to them because they have instructors that won't place grades into the student portal until the last week of the MOD. I on the other hand, grade the assignments/tests and place into the portal.

I personally don't feel that this is a good practice because the students really don't like this method.

LT

Students actively want to be a part of the learning process. This keeps them engaged and active in their own progress.

Monica,
