Whenever I have a student who is absent for a quiz, not only do I give them another version of the test but I also deduct 10 points from their score as well.

Adhering to school policy is important. But it's best when an instructor has the latitude to make individual decisions based on the specific and unique situations.

I have a difficult time okaying a make up test. They really have to have a legitamate reason for missing that class. My students know when their tests are going to be and typically will show up and if they are not feeling well, leave after the test.

Each instructor needs to decide two factors; one is being as fair as possible for all students, and the other is assessing learning.

This method is very fair! I understand why a zero is not necessarily the answer. On a lower weighted homework assignment I feel a zero is warranted. Receiving a late homework assignment delays all other classmates their results.

Seems fair as long as students know the requirements and deductions beforehand.

The course I teach is Career Management (resumes, etc.) I do not allow missed homework at full value, but rather will allow it to be submitted for half value.

This is fair, and let's the students know they'll be accountable for their presence for tests, and also the consequences for absences.
