extra credit

I never liked giving extra credit since it appears to dilute the grading system for the student. I am open to other ideas that might work to change my thoughts.

James,
I'm with you. I'm all for extra "learning activity or project", but for the purpose of the student demonstrating knowlege and understanding, not points to raise a failing grade.

The concept of extra-credit applies to the eager student who is infatuated with the subject matter and wants to learn more. Usually these students do not exist and if they did, they would be pulling a strong 95+ average anyway. I have not found a use for it.

I try not to give extra credit, unless the class as a whole can benefit from it

Francisco,
Yeah, we want to focus on learning outcomes, not giving busy assignments.

Barry Westling

I agree, and if I wanted to give extra credit it's not possible to grade and receive credit.

Gwen,
I agree with you. Points and grades should reflect the commensurate learning that has occurred.

Barry Westling

William,
I believe if it is given, it should account for only a small part of the overall grade, be announced at the beginning of the course, and specifics of deadlines, topic and such related details made perfectly clear. Graded assignments are subject to my approval, something I'm unwilling to give if missed or absence of regular assignments have occurred. That's like rewarding unacceptable behavior.

I also am not big on giving extra credit. I feel that if they take the tests, do assignments, projects, and class participation, this is a large part of the grade. I don't feel an extra credit should be what passes a student.
