extra credit assignments
i thinkextra credit very important for student who may not be up to par but it allows the student a chance of success.

Right, and points are mostly about grades, and less about learning, in general. Like anything, there are always exceptions.

I agree. Students are motivated when given the tools to learn the given material and will put in the work to achieve success. Extra credit sometimes gives students an "excuse" to not complete assigned work knowing they have a "fall back" to getpoints.

Students should be given assignments that help them learn. An assignment that is given merely to boost points or to improve a grade and has little learning content really helps no one.
