being a role model
being who you are and what do you represent for the student is very important to the eyes of a student, sometimes a word can make a lifetime differences
Hi Marlene:
You amke a strong point here - and how important it thus becomes for us to "walk our talk" when we ask for specific expectations. If we can not meet the same expectations, why then should the student?

I agree with you as well Farid. Students are lead by example and we need to be that example for them. We want them to be on time, then we need to be early. And when we are not, apologize. We need to show these students that we are humans and when we make mistakes, we take accountability and owernship for those mistakes. Students will respect us when we show them who we are by not always telling them when they are wrong, but by laughing along with them if they are laughing at you for doing something silly or foolish. Enjoy your time with your students when you are role-modeling.
Hi Mike:
Nothing can substitute for courtesy, respect, honesty, sincerity, and genuine care for students. With these tenets, most students will respond favorably, and maybe even forgive lesser attributes a teacher may exhibit because of it.

I have to agree with farid, one or two kind words can literally change a life.
Hi Farid:
We do have an opportunity to be good role models. Of course, we have a special vocational competence. But we can also be caring, approachable, honest and sincere, natural - all the while being prepared and ready to assist our students do and achieve their best. We owe that to them.
