student centered teaching

i like this approch to teaching.. it makes the student accountable involved and active in the learning process. It is more like a patnership between the learner and the instructor.

Hi Tammie:
This sounds like a good way to facilitate this main idea of student centered learning. The idea is to have the student's best interest at heart, keeping in mind what you want them to be able to do at the end of your course.

Hi Michael:
Student-centered teaching really involves keeping in mind what best imparts the information to the student, or what's "best" for the student's interests.

This idea involves many facets, including the instructor's attitude about it.

I do projects with my students to help get them involved. This brings in a lot of variety from each individual and also gives me other ideas as well to use for other classes.

Hi Daniel:
Student centered is flexing to meet the individual needs of students while still obtaining course objectives. Much as you descibe by example.

I am a drafting instructor that gets students each term that have varying skill levels. This can be challenging because the experienced students can get bored and the less experienced students can easily get lost. I have found student centered teaching to be very effective. Fortunately, my classes are small (6-8 students) which allows me to spend ample time with each student to build on their strengths and discuss their weaknesses.

I agree the student should own the project, so the instructor can facilitate and answer questions.

Hi Nancy:
You're right, it is a kind of partnership. Student centered puts the focus on the individual student, their needs and individual learning styles, and ultimately their success in class. It shifts the focal point from the teachers fixed curriculum to a modified version that addresses invidual student needs.
