Always good idea to have guess speakers to give students more than one perspective of careers
Guess Speakers can be used as a great motivation tool, they share experiences and can keep students focus on their carrer goals.
Hi David:
Guest speakers can be a great way to motivate a student and renew their interest in topics you've been discussing. And, they get the chance to hear about the content from a fresh perspective.

Hi Julie:
Guest speakers are a great way to bring new enthusiasm to the students by offering another perspective on what they are learning about.
The key here is keeping student motivated about the subject matter as much as possible.

Hi Charles:
You got it - guest speakers keep the information fresh which serves to keep student interest up.
Keeping interest up probably also helps to keep student morale up.

I am a firm believer that a guest speaker be chosen not just for field expertise but for their ability to engage students with humor, anecdotes, etc. I have found that disinterest in a speaker can equate to possible disinterest or "change of heart" for the student's chosen career field.
Hi John:
Here are some resources to consider:
* Fellow teachers
* Chamber of Commerce
* Local/regional profession society
* Supervisory/manager of larger firm in your area
* Recent graduate (better performer)
* Civic organization (Rotary, Kiwanis, etc)
* Employment agencies
* Church groups
* Textbook suppliers

I am new to the location where I am teaching and really dont know anyone in the field here. Any suggestions?
Charles and all-
While this is true; there is much more than just bringing someone in to speak.
I once brought in someone who the students were to critique since it was a speech course and I gave the speaker the required elements of the speech: 7-9 minutes, outline, visual aid etc., to which he followed 'none.' Needless to say after he was on minute '20' I stopped him.
The students loved him and wanted to learn more; however, from the aspect of the requirements he failed miserably.
What other things do you think should a speaker be informed of prior to being a guest speaker?
