There are many aspects of respect. knowledge is pone thing, but I think students respect instructors as they sense the instructors respect the students. This respect can be facilitated in regular one to one conferences with the students. I think the greatest need an adult has is to be understood. It really takes a review of the class structure to find a time for individual meetings that are focused upon the student's perception of what's working in the class and what could be better

I know some other instructors that are far more knowledgeable than me but get far less respect because of their attitude and how they come across to students. So I would have to disagree with you.
