Real world examples

Greetings. I am a part time IT instructor and a full, corporate IT manager. Prior to that, I was a consultant and did services for over 60 different companies around the world. I teach introductory IT courses and consider it the highlight of my day.

When I am teach my courses, I always mention jobs based around the discussion topic is used in some of the various companies I have work for and give a sample job description and working conditions. I also mention salary and career paths. It appears that all of my students enjoy hearing about the various jobs and occasionally I have a student come by during break or after a class and ask for a little more information about the topic.

Greg,
Students love stories. When they are related to the work setting they are training for, they are even more memorable. If they include something unusual, strange, remarkable, or interesting, students will likely always remember these stories. Of course, we need to stick to the objectives for the course. I'm just saying that whenever we can the real world is fascinating, and can be a potentialy effective way to keep students attention and assist them in their learning.

I use real world experiences from my time in the field for giving examples on diagnosis procedures as an auto tech. I can watch for the expressions as they are thinking about the steps of the procedure and the result of the diagnosis. I also share mistakes that i have made by saying dont ask me how I know , after describing the wrong way of doing something with a negative result. It lets them know you are human but able to learn from your mistakes .

Hi Michael:

Real world examples are a great way to drive home understanding about a topic. This is especially true when dealing with career oriented classes.

Hi Jane:

Field trips and guest speakers are a great way to renew interest in the material you’ve been discussing in class. It gives the student’s a chance to speak with people (possibly in the field they are training for), and gain a different and new perspective about the topics at hand.

Also, they might get the chance to ask some questions about the topics you’ve discussed and get a better understanding overall.

Hi Kelly:

One way to provide real world examples is field trips and guest speakers.

Hi Sandie:
One idea is to do this no matter what as a way of bringing relevance to the topic you are discussing.

Hi Robert:
Real-world examples are especially great for courses that involve career training in some way. Students will be especially interested in this kind of information because they may encounter it on the job.

Hi Christina:
Additionally, the student will possibly get the chance to understand something you've been discussing in class just by seeing it with their own eyes.

Hi Lise:
Similar to guest speakers and field trips, using these scenarios in your teaching is a great way to renew interest in the topics you've discussed, and perhaps bring fresh perspective.

I teach an introductory law class for students preparing for careers n courtroom settings. I like to give "real world" examples and anecdotes to illistrate legal points or concepts. This not only reinforces the material in the students' minds, but also helps to clear up misconceptions and misinformation picked up from our entertainment and news media.

Let's face it, even the best instructor can't keep the students fully engaged all the time. A guest speaker gives everyone a chance to hear a different perspective.

Bringing the 'real world' into the classroom through personal experiences or observations help the students "connect the dots" between the theory and application of the discussion topic. I teach academic criminal justice classes and I am able to draw upon my 36 years of police experience to cover almost every topic. These real world discussion are not just war stories, they are more like parables which help the students understand the concepts being presented.

I like using guest speakers who can input their own real world experiences. They may have a different approach to a topic that can show the diversity of our field.

Hi Jerry:
The example you give is a great method to renew the student's interest in in the topics you've been discussing in class. This may provide a new perspective for the student to learn from.

Hi John:
So here, we're talking about how the use of the kind of examples you describe may help to keep a student's interest renewed throughout the course.

Hi Ronald:
Like you so aptly describe, by using real world examples, we may often renew the student's interest in the topic at hand.

Hi Kyla:
Using real-world examples is considered by most education enthusiasts as a very effective method to apply what the student is learning. This is especially true in the way you've described, or more generally to any career oriented course.

I teach in the medical field as well and my students love hearing about reality experiences in the OR. It engages them to ask questions and leads to a more open discussion. Of course I can usually encorporate personal experiences that I encountered with my children or family which leads to further open discussion and allows them to relate to the information. It allows them to not only view me in a professional role but in a human role as a mother.
