Finding a balance
When approaching a new class, it is important to know yourself as an instructor and the types of students you will run into. The issue I am facing is I have students on both sides of the spectrum of learning - some want to and others want it handed to them. It is difficult to find the middle ground where both types are being challenged so they can identify their strengths and weaknesses.
How do you teach in the middle of the road?
Hi Kiera:
One thing that might work well when you need to re-establish a ablance in objectives is to divide up the students into groups, and have each group research one section of the subject matter, then have each group present to the whole class.

Greetings,
I have had this same difficulty. My typical response is try to arrange the requirements where the students who don't want to work are forced to. I teach film production classes and I often have students who would rather just sit and watch. By putting the student into a role in the production in which they have to participate forces them to adapt.
