Guest Speakers in a College Success Course and Other Courses

I have had Guest Speakers come to my live College Success courses that I have taught. If I assigned a Project in an Excel course, for example, and a former student had a very organized and detailed project, I would ask them if they would be a Guest Speaker the next semester. It was a wonderful way to have students not only involved in their own classes but in classes that other students were enrolled in.

Hi Laurie:

Field trips and guest speakers are a great way to renew interest in the material you’ve been discussing in class. It gives the student’s a chance to speak with people (possibly in the field they are training for), and gain a different and new perspective about the topics at hand.

Also, they might get the chance to ask some questions about the topics you’ve discussed and get a better understanding overall.

Regards, Barry

That's wonderful Laurie and it works effectively. The students get a chance to see excellent samples of former students' works and projects. Very often also, the students tend to see themselves in the guest speakers that we invite in class and it gets them motivated and inspired.

Hi Laurie,
I like your idea of having former students come back to your class to demonstrate skills to new students.

I have used that technique also and I think it empowers the former students, and it shows the new students that it is obtainable.

Have a great day!
