The Good, the Bad, and the Organized

As this module points out, we should always seek improvement. When I first began teaching, I remember evaluating the "good" and the "bad" in my previous instructors (the "pros" and "cons"). I would have to say that the instructors who provided the most structure and organization, the ones who were prepared adequately for class, were the most successful. I have never tried a teaching journal per se, but I do make marks within my notes and outlines concerning what works and what doesn't. I honestly had never thought about using the colored paper.

Hi Anthony:

As we see from a lot of feedback and comments, the students tend to lose credibility for the instructor that is unprepared on a consistent basis. If that's true, then what may be the long-term, negative impact on the learning environment and/or relationship of the instructor with those students?

Regards, Barry

I definately agree that the more organized I am for class, the smoother class flows. My students seem to respond well to the structure enviroment. However, there are those days where everything goes wrong, copier doesn't work.. etc. I try to have atleast 2 backup lectures just in case.

I agree with colored paper, however, I use different fonts to draw the attention to what I would like them to see.

When I first started teaching, what I thought was prepared did not even scratch the surface. After years of practice, classes and trial and error I can get more done in less time because I know what I need to do. I think the colored paper idea is a great idea. I did use it the other day when I gave out an assignment on paper with roses on it. I must admit though it was because we had run out of copy paper and I was using my "stash" of specialty paper. My prep Math students have requested stickers on their assignments. Most of them have young children and it helps them stay motivated when they can put a good paper on the frig for their children to see.
