Field trips, how many?
For example, in a biology class, some students may want to become nurses, others biologist and maybe some others biochemical engineers. I agree that field trips are good for students but for example taking students to a coral reef may be interesting for a biology major student but not so much for a biochemical engineer. I would assume 2 or 3 trips per term might be OK to give all students the opportunity to see something in their field. Are 2 - 3 trips per term too much?
Is 1 trip per term too little? Any feedback is welcome
Agreed. As a mathematics instructor, finding field trips that appropriately emphasize core content and course objectives is a challenge. What field trips are you aware of that support our school's mission statement, create student interest in the mathematics field, and provide real world connections? I am particularly interested in a field trip that demonstrates the need for mathematics expertise in the areas of fractions, and algebraic word problems.
I would like to take students to as many places as we could fit into our class time, with the understanding that reflection of the trip will take place in class the next time. I enjoyed my trips as a student and I felt it gave me a sense of refreshment to be able to apply what I had seen into my studies. It's hard to find a perfect field trip for everyone so having students input where they would like to go and see is an option as well.
It dependson the insitution but I prefer guest speakers on the field. Any feedback is welcome
