Hi Michelle:
To find out what kind of instructor you are, one might consider keeping a teaching journal. One thing a journal can help to reveal is what kind of person you are when you write down how you feel things went in class.
Another great thing about using a teaching journal is that it might help reveal items that need improvement in the lesson prior to the next go ‘round. Also, improvements can be made in both what has worked, and what hasn’t.

Having a business background, I never thought I would become an instructor in the post-secondary environment. I initially took an assignment as an instructor when I was in need of a "good paying" 2nd job. Needless to say, my first semester as an instructor was hit or miss at best. That was 10 years ago. Thankfully, I have evolved since that rocky start.
I have learned that understanding myself as an instructor is important because that understanding of myself leads to the understanding of others. I have evolved into an instructor who strives to understand students. Do I always succeed in understanding my students? Unfortunately, no. There are some students who are closed off and defensive. BUT, the effort on my part is there. I do not allow those students I cannot reach to impact my attitude or continued efforts to reach out to students.
I like the term "instructional leader". Through my evolution as an instructor, I have become a leader of students. I lead by example; arriving to class on time, being prepared, and returning assignments in a timely manner. I lead by making learning interesting and fun. Adding some fun to learning motivates students to attend class and become engaged in discussions. This is not to say my class turns into a 3-ring circus. I maintain control, but involve the students in (sometimes) spirited discussions. This facilitates the use of critical-thinking and communication skills. This is key as an instructional leader. It is my job to prepare my students for the careers they will have some day. Their ability to express their thoughts in a clear concise manner is paramount to their success.
Understanding yourself as an instructor allows you to grow. As a new instructor, I learn new things everyday. I use the strengths of other instructors and listen to the feedback from my students.
Well, in my case I work in an environment that is heavily populated by outgoing, expansive faculty. A large part of their career had to do with catering to a public forum.
I'm basically introverted by nature and i used to think I just did not fit in. However, over time I realized that the students appreciated a change of style--one that refelcts the personality type of a fair number of those who had previously been overlooked.
Hi Aaron:
Keep in mind the idea of BALANCE when discussing or thinking about personality in the classroom. If there is too much of any personality style, be it too humorous, or too strict, etc., this may serve only to distract the student from a full understanding of the course material.
