Hi Karen:

One of the best ways of being a student-centered instructor is to consistently be flexible in our approach. This may be difficult, especially with technical course work that must be delivered to the student in order for them to move on in a training program.

However, if we can always keep in mind the teaching methods that work best for your student group, and having a willingness to make changes in delivery on the fly will promote the outcomes that are in the best interests of our students.

When I am concentrating on what is best for my students, all the political issues don't interfere. I had another instructor in my program who wanted to know how I always got my grades done on time. I told her that I take them home to complete. She was horrified ! All she cared about was that I wasn't getting paid to do it at home. I told her that it was better for my students to get their grades on time than for me to worry about the fact that my boss didn't give me time to do it on the clock.

I think it will not only help me but, others if we are a student-centered instructor because, everything will then be student focused. I always keep in mind when teaching how dificult it was for me to learn certain things. So, if it was dificult for me, nine times out of ten, it will be dificult for others. My goal is to keep it simple, yet I do understand that certain things that I teach are complex but, I always find a simple way of presenting the information and or material so that it's not overwhelming for the students. The sucess of the student is always at the forfront of my teaching. I enjoy being a student centered instructor.

Being a student centered instructor is important for delivering the material to the customer. In this case the customer is my student. However, I am mindful that I have many customers in that the whole class is a customer, the profession is a customer and the accrediting board is also my customer. At the center of this customer base is the student. They need to be deucated in a manner that maximally optimizes all of mu customers.

If I center my teaching and management strategy on "student comes first", then everything else falls into it's proper place. I am there to service the needs of the students and should those needs change, so will I.
