It help you keep in account of what you have done what you have, tried and what is working for you
Hi Kirsten:
Not too in depth. One helpful thing about using a teaching journal is that it might help reveal items that need improvement in the lesson prior to the next go ‘round. Also, improvements can be made in both what has worked, and what hasn’t.

I never thought of using a teaching journal. However, I think it could be particularly useful in developinga new course.
I can keep track of the does and don'ts of each course I teach and each lesson. This would be especially helpful when devlopinga new course.
There is no amount of training available to adequatly prepare one to deal with a large group of peers, watching every move and hoping to catch a mistake. waiting to prove their knowledge is more superior than the instuctor before them. No one told me to keep a journal, but I thought it would be a great idea so I may log my thoughts as I go down this rugged path alone. It helps to remember what works and what doesnt and with all the things learned every day, who has the brain capacity to log everything?
Keeping a teaching journal helps with instructional improvement because the journal allows the educator to assess her/his own skills and tactics. The journal is a means of monitoring best or failed practices, and also allows the educator an opportunity to monitor learner reactions, which leads to a more learner-centered approach to teaching. For example,
an instructor may be able to privately (one:one)address disengaged students by mentioning the student's apparent behavior (surfing the Web, side conversation, head down or sleeping during lecture, etc.)and ask the student for their ideas about making lecture more interesting.

A teaching journal can help you refer to what has worked and was less productive with your past experiences.
Using a journal is more important than I first thought.I have been able to track the things that work and the things that did'nt. I have also been able to use the journal to stay on task with the day to day assignments for the course. I think using a journal helps you better manage your class.

Hi Jennifer:
To find out what kind of instructor you are, one might consider keeping a teaching journal. One thing a journal can help to reveal is what kind of person you are when you write down how you feel things went in class.

I haven't used a teaching journal, however I do make memos to myself about things that occur during instruction.
A journal would enable me to be able to keep a log of events (items needing action). Answers to frequently asked questions. Real world examples that could be used to support the curriculum. A glossary of terms used in the curriculum with a page crossreference. list of mathmatical formulas and functions frequently used.References to other publications for student reference including web sites. All too often during instruction I will need a piece of information not in the curriculum and I cant remember where I put it, If it was in the journal I would always have it available.

It allows you to see what has worked and what doesn't work in your classroom situation. By writing it down after each class section, you can look back at a later time and see which activities were well-received by class participants and which were poorly received. Writing your journal entries immediately will let you keep an accurate record of class activities. Reaction to activities might also be based on class personality. What didn't work this term, might work with a different group of students in another term. The journal can provide a history of attempted activities, both successful and not-so-successful. In this way you can improve your instructional capabilities.
