the students are getting great benefits when taking field trips and listening to guest speakers because they have a chance to see what it is in the real world. This give the students a chance to see and talk to other people other than the instructor. It allows them to be able to ask questions and make things more exciting.

I especially like incorporating field trips because it gives the students the whole picture. It allows them to see the end product of all their hard work at school. Guest speakers are also great for that purpose. Guest speakers gives them the opportunity to ask in-depth questions about a typical day in their chosen field.

If they can see what there after they will work harder to get there

I try to take my students out so that they can see what their future profession encounters, this gives them a chance to ask questions and decide if this profession is actually something they want to persue.
I try to have guest speakers often, this also shows a window into the medical world, through the eyes of someone else, the speakers answer questions, and this gives the students a chance to express themselves.

I think a field trip is a great activity for students because, it gives them the opportunity to see how things are doing in their chosen field of study.

These are 2 resources that instructors can utilize to reinforce relevance of a subject being taught, inject motivation into teaching atmosphere, & reveal deeper exposure to field of interest.

Field trips are a great motivator. Students get to get out and observe others working in the field that they want to work in. A day away from the norm of sitting in class all day is a great way to get students attention. Also, having a speaker to come gives students a chance to listen to someone in their field of study and ask questions.

At the MBA level, students really relate to knowledgeable business people who are applying the theories and models discussed during the course to real world situations. They also benefit from hearing about "failures" as well as "success stories."

Hi Charlotte:
Something else is the student may get the chance to speak to someone in their field and ask invaluable questions that aren't fully addressed in the classroom.

Hi Allina:
The value of field trips and guest speakers is so high! Students often gain fresh perspective that may help them come to a better understanding about one of the topics you've discussed in class.

I have taught fifth grade for many years and have used guest speakers in the past. The children enjoyed having Civil War actors visit the classroom.

I would call the speakers in advance and give them an idea of what material was in the textbook. Also, the children would write questions that were sent to the speakers at least a week before the presentation. They could choose the best ones and incorporate them into their program.

The speakers appreciated the advance planning which resulted in a more effective program.

Guest speakers are a huge part of the class. It enables the class to see what is going to be expected of them after graduation and it gives them an oppurtunity to interact with a real person inthe field not just the instructor. Guest speakers tend to be more frank and open about expectations. There is no sugar coating as some may call it coming from the instructors. Field trips give the studeent the chance to see and feel what is in store for them after graduation. Both are great oppurtunities for the students.

Taking field trips and having a guest speaken gives the student a view from a person in the career field they are studing.

Hi Lillian:
Field trips are especially helpful in that they offer fresh perspective about topics you've covered in class, and may also serve to renew interest in the overall ideas you've discussed.

Hi Rosetta:
The nice thing about both of these types of activities is that it serves the student's interestes and understanding of material you have covered. That different perspective you mentioned may be just the thing to help them understand a topic you've covered in class.

Regards, Barry

Hi Faith:
Indeed, these kinds of activities can help strengthen understanding due to the fresh perspective the student gains from seeing the concepts you've discussed in a classroom setting right in front of their eyes.

Field trips allow the student to visualize how their in class book work will play into the real work environment. The student can see how the step by step instructions from a book may have to be altered safely to be applied in the workplace for an employee to complete all assignments by their superior.

In my field, nursing, field trips aren't applicable. However, the students do have multiple required clinical exposures to "aclimmate" them to the nursing culture and apply learned material to the "real world". Guest speakers would be very useful to them as it can offer them other views or experiences that are presented by someone other then the faculty.

I believe that the benefit of field trips and guest speakers is that it gives the students an outside view of their chosen career field. It can also be a very effective state change.

Hi Nancy:
Field trips! What an idea - if only we could incorporate more of these into our learning modules, the chances of the information becoming real would definitely renew a person's interest in the topic at hand.
